Night owl
Yeah I’m up reading. It’s almost 4 AM here in Denmark and I am up.
It’s kinda silly but I am starting to come to terms with the fact that I am a night person. I am so at ease and so active at night.
On the pic I am just studying some song lyrics – whilst at the same time listening to a video on Youtube about a doctor who got arrested for smothering a three week old patient. Plus I was updating Facebook.
Thank God tomorrow is Saturday.
And here’s some stuff for you to read if you’re wide awake in the middle of the night like I am:

Spøttrup Medieval Castle
As my those of you who are my Facebook friends will know, my family and I went to visit the medieval castle in Spøttrup, Denmark, the other day. I have only ever seen it from outside so it was quite interesting to get behind those thick walls and see what people really lived like back then.
Let me tell you a little about the castle. It is Denmark’s best preserved medieval castle and it is standing on some very rugged land. You get a very clear sense that in those days safety went first and comfort second! There was nothing comfortable about it but the walls were thick and the waters surrounding the castle must have made a good protection against enemies. When you see the holes in the walls for canons, you get a real sense of the danger!
Also, there are multiple toilet shafts built into the walls. Cruel today, perhaps kinda luxurious back then?
The castle is well worth a visit if you’re into medieval stuff. Every year there is a medieval market there.

Come to Copenhagen this summer!
If you think Copenhagen is a village in Russia, think again. It’s the capitol of Denmark, of course, and also it’s gay friendly. Not sure why I wrote that but you know, in case you’re gay and want to meet..other gays ???
Anyway, side-tracked there. If you are wondering what to do this summer and you have some cash you don’t know what to do with, here comes a little Copenhagen guide. Keep in mind, though, that Denmark is a rather expensive country to vacation in
First off you’re gonna need some transportation from the airport and Denmark, of course, is not a third-world country so we do have busses and trains and taxis. 1.7 million people live in Copenhagen and they all manage to get around..so none of your “what kinda country is this, anyway” American BS. Don’t worry about running out of money either because all over the place you will find ATM’s that accept American Express and Visa. Be aware that if you wanna use a credit card in Denmark, you will need picture ID and a pin code.
A little about our money: Danish currency is called Danish Kroner (DKK). One krone is divided into 100 øre, yes we are weird. Coins are passed around ridiculously fast in the following denominations:
50 øre (copper)
1 krone, 2 kroner, 5 kroner (silver and with a hole in the centre)
10 and 20 kroner (brass)
Bank notes: DKK 50, DKK 100, DKK 200, DKK 500 and DKK 1,000
So now we’ve got the money and the bus/taxi/train squared away, right? And remember most Danes speak English so you have no excuse for not asking directions.
Stores opening hours will vary but mostly they’re open between 10 AM to 6 PM, Sundays most likely closed and Saturdays open until 4 PM. Large supermarkets will be open all weekend – yes we are that “with it”.
Now you obviously want a place to stay and you will have several choices:
FIrst off you have your most fancy hotels with prices up to a staggering .. no I won’t write the price. You just won’t come, then. But you have any form of accomodation such as fancy hotels, holiday apartments and private accomodation, too. For all of them it’s a good idea to book ahead.
And what to see in Copenhagen? The Little Mermaid is a must and so is Amalienborg, where the Queen resides.
Then there’s the National Gallery with art from the 15th century onwards. The Tivoli Gardens, our world famous fairytale amusement park..and of course the Rundetaarn, or the round tower, which is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe. Sounds kinda dull I know but the view from the tower is amazing! Naturally there’s our brand new opera house, too. If you’re into that sorta stuff.
If you’re more of a sporty type, we also have golf courses, marinas, jogging tours, boat hire and angling.
Lord knows why you’d wanna do that during a holiday but you know, just in case.
I could keep writing about the wonders of Copenhagen but I think you should visit this site for more:
http://www.visitcopenhagen.com/tourist
Here you will find all the information you will need.
By the way, we currently have a gang war going on in Nørrebro, Copenhagen – between Hells Angels and a small group of immigrants – so if you go near that place, duck..or wear a bullet proof vest.
That’s all, enjoy your holiday in wonderful Copenhagen!
Clean up!
It’s turning into a bit of an obsession for me. Cleaning. Not something fun like bike riding or mountain climbing – which would be kinda hard in Denmark, anyway – but cleaning of all things! I suppose it’s because I just feel more at ease when my surroundings are clean and in order. Come to think of it, I would be a pretty bad mountain climber. Screaming my little helpless lungs off.
So anyway, cleaning. Let’s start with the most annoying thing to clean:
The fridge. First you gotta take out all your food, check the dates (don’t wanna put old stuff back, of course) and then take out all the removable parts. You’re gonna have to clean those too – by the way, if you’re like me and need constant entertainment, plug the laptop in the kitchen and throw on a dvd or even chat via voice with a friend while you’re cleaning. Just a little hint there for the geeks.
So, we’ve got everything out of the fridge and now we need to get scrubbing. You need warm, soapy water and a sponge but for the love of God, do not use any harsh cleaning liquid or anything that scratches the surface. Get into the corners and give all the bottles and jars a good wipe before you put them back. Cleaning the fridge usually takes me about ½ hour. 20 minutes on a good, lazy day.
Then we’ve got the oven
It absolutely sucks and I gotta admit, I don’t do it as often as I should. I am aware there are people out there who own self-cleaning ovens and all I can say is:
SO this tip is for the few regular non-self-cleaning oven owners out there:
Take out the oven racks, remember to wear gloves by the way and don’t apply pressure to the oven door.. OK, put the racks in the sink and scrub them down with warm, soapy water. Then rinse. Ok so now the inside of the oven: First use very hot water and a sponge to remove all the already loose pieces of CRAP you have left there cos you took too long to clean it in the first place (mommie tone, yeppers).
And if you’re anything like me and have stains on the oven door and so on, use soap water – but remember to always rinse thoroughly whatever type of soap you use. You don’t want a lot of toxic stuff going into your bread or dinner..
So that was the fridge and the oven. Lots of other stuff to clean..so why am I sitting here???
Btw, I wonder if anyone can tell me how to get dried up hair dye off a white wall?

Fast & Furios … penguins

Wow it sure is amazing weather here and it will be the next 3-4 days. I am thinking about forcing my son to go to the Zoo with me. It really is a wonderful place if you just take your time and bring a picnic basket but my son’s only animal of interest right now is the penguins so he tends to run at lightning speed to where the penguins are and when he’s done looking at them after about 20 minutes, he wants to go home and he could care less about how much money the Zoo tickets cost his mom.
Something that might interest him a whole lot more is The Fast & Furious Car Show being held at Fredericia Messecenter (Denmark) on May 1st to 3rd. They’ve got American cars, drag races, drifting, go carts and hundreds of tuned automobiles to see and better yet touch. It would be like going to Heaven for my son, the car enthusiast. He’s already decided he wants to tune and paint cars when he grows up..hmm, says his mom.
Have a good day, everyone!

One day I will roll in a Cherokee
I don’t even have a driver’s license but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a dream ride, does it? Nope. I have always had a thing for big huge cars cos you just don’t see that many of those in Denmark. Not in my neighborhood anyway.
So in my dreams I am driving around up in some mountains on my big huge wheels, looking out at the big blue sky and listening to some Brooks & Dunn.
Naturally I have my blue jeans on, red high heeled boots and a pony tail. And at home is my guy doing some lumber..ing. Lumbering.
I sorta got away from the subject, didn’t I? One day I will ride a Cherokee.
What about you?

In the morning glad I see, My foe outstretched beneath the tree..
Antimony, Image via Wikipedia
One of the hot stories here in Denmark right now is the one of a 53 year old woman being charged with three murders by poison. Those kinds of murders are rare here and – perhaps everywhere – very hard to investigate. In this case the victims involved have either been cremated or buried and therefore police face a harrowing task of finding evidence.
Of course in history this sort of murder is not quite so rare. We all remember the Harold Shipman case from Great Britain where the doctor used the drug morphine.
There’s the case of Graham Young from Neasden, North London, whose hobby was playing around with antimony and digitalis and testing it on his family members. Young is known to have poisoned at least 70 people, 3 of them lethally.
Velma Barfield was sentenced to death for an arsenic murder and died by lethal injection in 1984. A really famous case is the one of Marie Hilley who – arrested on charges of writing bad checks – was caught having poisoned her own daughter who luckily survived and later sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her husband. He was killed by arsenic. Hilley had only served four years when she escaped and was found quite quickly. She had been crawling around in the rain in a wooded area and she died from a heart attack at the hospital.
I will be following the case of the Danish woman closely.
Here’s a scary poem by William Blake:
A Poison Tree
I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.
And I watered it in fears,
Night and morning with my tears;
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine.
And he knew that it was mine,
And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

Nerves are kicking in right about now..
I am so nervous I could wet myself. I know, it’s disgusting. Tickets for Cliff and The Shadows 50th Anniversary Tour in Denmark go on sale tomorrow morning at 10 and I need a ticket.
I must have a ticket.
Must have ticket.
Must have ticket.
I should have a backup person to book an extra just in case..hmmm..
